LeAnn Rimes released the smash single "Blue," in 1996 and set the country music world spinning. People were amazed that voice came from a teenager. Lila McCann then proved teenage artists aren't just a fluke occurrence, recording her successful debut album. Now Jenny Morris has arrived. Unfortunately, Jenny doesn't deliver songs with the power and maturity of her fellow teen artists.
Jenny Morris is a developing artist and that shows in this collection of music. Weak song selection and poor vocal performances plague Girl On The Run. Songs like "Nobody's Business," aren't delivered well. "I Wouldn't Change A Thing," features an annoying chorus and Morris's over sings the song. "Love Thing," is a fun listen for the first couple of times, but then the interest is gone. Skip Ewing writes another good one with "It Must Be Love," but Jenny's voice jumps all over the place, making it hard to listen to.
There are moments when Jenny Morris shows us how good she can be. Strangely enough these songs are the first and last tracks. "True Love Won't Treat You Like That," has the sassy attitude that works with Jenny's voice. The album's closer and title track is by far the albums best. A catchy instrumental and a powerful vocal performance make it a keeper.
Girl On The Run is a disappointing collection of music, but it shows some potential. Give Jenny Morris some time and who knows where she will end up.

The album stands above the rest. This is a record that every country music fan needs to have in their collection. This album is better than the average release. A strong record with some flaws that keep it from reaching that 5 star level. This album is an average country release. Doesn't posses qualities that make it stand out among all the other albums out there. A weak record that lacks solid songs or good vocal performances. Sample before you buy. This record is a bargin-bin reject that just isn't worth the time or the money. Completely misses the mark. |
