Trisha Yearwood returns from a four year hiatus with the release of Jasper County. Whenever an artist takes an extended break it’s easy to have doubts about what the next album will be like. The good news for country music fans is that Trisha is back in her best form and this is easily her strongest album in years.

On Jasper County Trisha finds herself reunited with long time producer Garth Fundis. In recent years Yearwood has tried working with a few different producers only to reach mixed results. Inside Out in particular was missing some of that early Trisha Yearwood magic even though the power of her vocal performances saved the album. Fundis seems to have a knack for making Trisha sound her best and this album is no different.

This album continues to prove that Trisha has an ear for excellent songs. The album opens with the mid-paced groove of “Who Invented The Wheel” which is a song that lets all of Trisha’s best vocal qualities come to the forefront. The rocking “Pistol” tells a tale of the difficulties of falling for a “bad boy” and is a surefire number one single if it ever makes it out to radio. It’s been awhile since Trisha has attempted a song like this one and she should make it a high priority to cover this territory again soon. The bluesy “Sweet Love” pushes Yearwood into some new musical territory and she sounds great doing it.

While there are a number of great upbeat tunes on Jasper County there are also some great slower songs to be found here. The single “Georgia Rain” is a well written and expertly sung tribute to Trisha’s hometown. “Tryin’ to Love You” and “Try Me” are also excellent. Trisha continues to prove she can sing most of the current batch of country music stars under the table.

Jasper County is a welcomed return to form from one of country music’s biggest stars. It’s signature Trisha Yearwood music and is strong from start to finish. Jasper County is worthy of a spot in your record collection, you will be hearing these songs for years to come.

The WOC Rating Scale

The album stands above the rest. This is a record that every country music fan needs to have in their collection.

This album is better than the average release. A strong record with some flaws that keep it from reaching that 5 star level.

This album is an average country release. Doesn't posses qualities that make it stand out among all the other albums out there.

A weak record that lacks solid songs or good vocal performances. Sample before you buy.

This record is a bargin-bin reject that just isn't worth the time or the money. Completely misses the mark.
