Purchase The Album

If I had only one line in which to describe Susan Haynes’ Sony Nashville debut, Crooked Little Heart, I would keep it short and simple; it is a terrific album from a terrific new artist. Well worth your money alone is Susan’s interpretation of the old Marie McKee gem, “Drinkin’ In My Sunday Dress.” With it’s driving, twangy rhythm and slightly a-typical lyrics, it is impossible to miss as it comes streaming through your stereo speakers.

Beyond that, we all know that first impressions are key, which is why the one two punch that leads off the record makes for such a treat. “Long Way To Memphis” and “Bottle Rocket,” also known as tracks one and two, are exceptional works. The former is an up-tempo, country to the bones anthem that you won’t be able to kick. No surprise, it comes from the very capable pens of Al Anderson and Leslie Satcher. The latter is a mid-tempo song with juicy, storytelling meat. It will completely capture your attention, and not only because you can’t wait to find out what happens to Celia and Tyler’s young love. The pacing and structure is so natural and conversational on “Bottle Rocket,” that you’ll have a hard time turning your head, and then an even harder time not hitting the repeat button. Songs like these are few and far between.

Elsewhere, “I Like Who I Am With You” adds some sheen and sparkle to the record, while “Not That Bad” turns the volume down and the heartbreak up. On the subject of heartbreak, no song does it better on Crooked Little Heart than “The Road Behind Me.” One of the five songs Susan had a hand in writing, it is an empowering tale of emotional recovery. It rings so deep and true for Susan, having been spawned from her own divorce, that when asked about the how it came to be, she remarked that her only choice was to “write [it] or spend thousands of dollars in therapy.”

Crooked Little Heart lands in stores on May 2, and will be available for on-line digital download (including iTunes) on Valentine’s Day, February 14. If you’re looking for something decidedly unpretentious and pretty terrific, this is it.

This album is an average country release. Doesn't posses qualities that make it stand out among all the other albums out there.

A weak record that lacks solid songs or good vocal performances. Sample before you buy.

This record is a bargin-bin reject that just isn't worth the time or the money. Completely misses the mark.
