There’s been a lot said about how Michelle Branch & Jessica Harp, otherwise known as The Wreckers, have picked up where the Dixie Chicks left off. I’m going to disagree on that point and just say that The Wreckers have a downright cool sound of their own.

On “Stand Still, Look Pretty,” their debut record for Maverick Records, the girls mine a wonderfully breezy and organic sound. Their first single, “Leave The Pieces,” is a bittersweet tale of breaking up, co-penned by the always lovely Jennifer Hanson.

Of particular note is the aching “Tennessee.” Captivating from the get-go, those who love country music for it’s raw, unbridled emotion will melt at lines like “I never had all the answers / I never had enough time / But I sure had all the reasons / Why you weren’t what I wanted to find…”

“My, Oh My” is another winner, and would seem to be a likely choice for the second single. While longtime Michelle Branch fans may find her transition from collaborations with Santana (“Game of Love”) and forays into smooth rock (“All You Wanted”), to rootsy mountain music a little strange, this reviewer would dare to say that she’s never sounded so comfortable.

“The Good Kind,” which was originally included on the One Tree Hill soundtrack, is a masterpiece so far as harmony vocals go. Plus, sly lines like “Do you want to run away together? / I would say it was your best line ever / Too bad I fell for it” will get to you.

Likewise, “Cigarettes” is an exceptionally well written song taken to another level by two voices seemingly made to complement one another. As if it’s searching lyrics weren’t enough, their vocal desperation tempered with hope, makes for an astounding musical landscape.

If there’s one fault with “Stand Still, Look Pretty,” it’s that it’s too short. When the hilariously dark “Crazy People” winds down in a burst of laughter, you’ll find yourself wishing there’s something that follows. Instead, the “repeat” button will have to do. Therein lies the problem with a good record – you just can’t get enough.

A round of applause for The Wreckers, y’all. This is what country music’s all about.

The WOC Rating Scale

The album stands above the rest. This is a record that every country music fan needs to have in their collection.

This album is better than the average release. A strong record with some flaws that keep it from reaching that 5 star level.

This album is an average country release. Doesn't posses qualities that make it stand out among all the other albums out there.

A weak record that lacks solid songs or good vocal performances. Sample before you buy.

This record is a bargin-bin reject that just isn't worth the time or the money. Completely misses the mark.
